Lawmakers Urge Senate to Act on HB 2087

Several House members gathered in the Capitol Rotunda to urge the Senate to act on HB 2087, the Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law. HB 2087 passed the House unanimously on May 12. It is awaiting action by the Senate Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure Committee.


Senate Judiciary – 12:15 p.m.

The Senate Judiciary Committee held a confirmation hearing to consider the nominations of Joseph K. Williams, III, Court of Common Pleas Allegheny County; Maureen T. Beirne, Court of Common Pleas, Bradford County; Wallace H. Bateman, Jr., Court of Common Pleas, Bucks County; and Joseph J. Musto, Court of Common Pleas, Luzerne County.  All nominees were favorably reported to the Senate Rules Committee.

The committee also considered HB 1543 with amendment A09543. The bill was unanimously reported as amended.

Senate State Government – 12:30 p.m.

The committee received a status report on the implementation of the Open Records Law by Terry Mutchler, the executive director of the Pennsylvania Office of Open Records. She told the committee the Office is working on interim rules and regulations including a fee structure. She said the have developed a website and a uniform Open Records request form. The committee also reported out two land conveyance bills, Senate Bill 1576 and House Bill 2483. Details later on the PLS Capitol Toolbox.

Environmentalists, Legislators urge passage of HB 2200

Several legislators and environmental groups gathered today in the media center to call on the Senate to pass HB 2200 before the end of session this week. Speakers highlighted the importance of enacting energy conservation measures before more rate caps expire.

House Finance – 12:00 p.m.

House Finance met to reconsider the vote on SB 1258 since there weren’t enough votes to pass the bill out on September 24th.  There was a unanimous vote to reconsider the bill, but the final vote on passing the bill out was 23-3.

Senate Appropriations – 10:00 a.m.

Senate Approp held a hearing this morning on the state of Pennsylvania’s budget in the economic crisis. Budget Secretary Mary Soderberg acknowledged revenues are down in the state, but observed Pennsylvania is weathering the storm better than a number of other states, including New York and New Jersey. Senator Vince Fumo warned about the likelihood of a $1billion+ structural deficit in the budget in 2009.
