Charter and Cyber Schools Rally for Choice

Lawmakers and 2,500 supporters gathered together for a rally hosted by the Pennsylvania Coalition of Charter Schools and Pennsylvania Families for Public Cyber Schools on the steps of the Capitol. Senator Jeff Piccola (R-Dauphin) said that he would “vigorously oppose  anything that would stop this movement.” Senator Anthony Williams (D-Philadelphia) expressed his support for the schools and said lawmakers should not support “failing monopolies and schools with too many drugs, and too much violence.” Check the PLS Capitol Toolbox later today for the full story.


Early Education Action Day Rally

500 people gathered in the Capitol Rotunda today for Quality Education through Salaries and Training’s (QUEST)  early education action day rally. Jodie Askins, Chair of QUEST stated “nothing will stop us from fighting for our kids.” She other speakers highlighted the importance of early education programs such as Pre-K Counts and the Keystone STARS and called on the legislators to continue support. Solobay Calls for Oversight of Municipal Electric Authorities

Rep. Tim Solobay (D-Washington) today announced he has introduced legislation, HB 1474, that would place municipally-owned electric authorities under the purview of the PUC. Currently these authorities are unregulated and customers have been subjected to excessive rate increases, he argued.

Group Holds Rally for Community MH/MR & Drug & Alcohol Funding

Nursing Home Advocates Rally for State, Federal Funding in Budget

The PA Health Care Association (PHCA) rallied in the Main Rotunda with over 500 advocates for nursing homes this morning.  Their message to the General Assembly and the Governor was to provide funding to long-term care facilities as resident demand and demand for Medicaid services increases. Speakers included nursing home employee Dianne George,  former nursing home resident Walter Heist, Andrew Wittman, the Administrator of a Perry County long-term care facility, PHCA Chairman Ray Calhoun and Dr. Stuart Shapiro, who serves as President and CEO of the PHCA. House Local Government – 9:30 a.m.

The House Local Government Committee met this morning to consider three bills and to receive an update on the PA Supreme Court decision regarding property tax assessments in Allegheny County. The bills were unanimously reported without discussion; HR 273 was amended. Representatives of the Local Government Commission and County Commissioners Association discussed the ramifications of the court decision and the legislature’s options.

House Judiciary – 10:00 a.m.

House Judiciary met this morning and voted four bills out of committee – HR 128, HB 1145, HB 1281 and HB 1426. Check the Capitol Toolbox later for the full story.

Rally Held to Urge Passage of Carbon Monoxide Alarm Bill

A group of lawmakers, fire safety and public health professionals, and the Pennsylvania Safe Homes Coalition held a Capitol Hill rally in support of HB 1445. This legislation would require carbon monoxide alarms in homes. Check the Capitol Toolbox later for the full story.

House Labor Relations – 10:00 a.m.

The House Labor Relations Committee held a meeting today to vote on two bills. The two house bills at hand today were HB 1303 and HB 1445, both sponsored by Representative Tim Solobay (D-Washington). HB 1303 was re-referred to the House Children and Youth Committee and HB 1445 was re-referred to the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee.
