Governor Rendell reacted positively to the House’s vote to non-concur in the Senate’s amendment to HB 1416 today, calling it a “tremendous victory for the children of Pennsylvania.” Speaking alongside Democratic leaders at a press conference, he said the process will now move to a conference committee following a Senate vote to insist on its amendment on Monday. House Speaker Keith McCall (D-Carbon) said he and Senate Republican leaders will begin negotiating tomorrow in the hopes of having a handshake agreement prior to the conference committee convening next week. Governor Rendell's Approval Rating Plummets 15 Points in Quinnipiac Poll

In a Quinnipiac University poll released today, state Democrats saw substantial losses in popularity and job approval. Governor Ed Rendell’s job approval rating shrunk to its lowest level ever, with only 39% approving. This marks a fifteen point drop over the past two months from May, when 54% of those polled approved of Rendell’s work. The poll also saw the Governor as  most responsible for the state’s budget mess, said Peter Brown, the Assistant Director for the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “The hassle in Harrisburg over the budget certainly caught the public’s attention and voters are angry about it,” Brown continued, “and the budget crisis clearly has put some scratches on him. Only 28% of the voters approve of his handling of the state budget and only 33% approve of his handling of the economy.” The poll also showed that voters do not approve of Rendell’s tax increase. Brown remarked that “a majority of voters would rather see state employees lose their jobs than an increase in taxes.” Check the Capitol Toolbox later today for the full story.

FYI BY PLS HAS ADDED TWEETS!

In the midst of the budget debates, PLS has managed to bring you one more awesome feature. We have added Twitter “tweets” to our blog. Just look on the right-hand side of the blog (www.fyibypls.com) for the latest tweets. We caution, however, that the views and opinions (and there are some pretty strong ones on Twitter) in no way represent the views or opinions of PLS. As we find more “tweeple” we will continue to add to the list. For now we are following legislators, prominent staffers, and a handful of Harrisburg reporters. If you find someone we’re missing, please drop us a line and we’ll add them to our line up. PLS has entered the Twitter-world, and is now tweeting. Follow us @mypls.
