RENDELL DISCUSSES IMPACT OF BUDGET IMPASSE ON HIGHER EDUCATION
Governor Rendell called on the Legislature to send him a budget bill that “adequately funds higher education†at a press conference Saturday at Harrisburg University. “I refused to sign SB 850 because we can and must do better,” he said, and emphasized that the bill “slashes PHEAA grants by $21 million.” The governor stated that 175,000 students depend on PHEAA grants to attend college, and the budget stalemate is holding up the funds. GOVERNOR SIGNS JUVENILE JUSTICE REFORM MEASURE
Governor Rendell signed HB 1648 into law Friday morning, paving the way for the creation of an Interbranch Commission on Juvenile Justice to investigate the recent scandal surrounding Luzerne County’s juvenile justice system. Potentially as many as 6,000 youths were affected by the actions of former Luzerne County judges Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan, who perpetrated a “terrible miscarriage of justice,†according to the governor, by receiving as much as $2.6 million in kickbacks
