PHILLY SALES TAX BILL MIGHT GET SENATE APPROVAL IN LATE AUGUST
The Senate will begin considering a bill designed to ease Philadelphia’s budget crisis on Wednesday, the start of at least a two-week process in the chamber Democrats have already said has been too-long delayed. House Bill 1828, which was approved in the House on August 5, would allow Philadelphia to increase its sales tax by 14 percent and restructure its pension system. Mayor Michael Nutter, who has been in the Capitol frequently in recent weeks to lobby for the measure, has said it is critical for the city to bridge its budget gap without significant layoffs. GOVERNOR OPPOSED TO MORE LIBRARY CUTS
Governor Rendell held a press conference yesterday at the East Shore Area Library to urge the Legislature to give him a budget that does not include “devastating cuts†to libraries throughout the state. “I am fighting for a $68 million library subsidy,†he said and indicated that SB 850 “would take funding back to 11 years ago.†The governor was joined by Dauphin County Library System
