Governor Rendell Names New Press Secretary

Governor Ed Rendell today named Gary Tuma as his new press secretary, effective Monday, August 17.

“Gary Tuma is a veteran newsman who brings a variety of perspectives to the job – he has been a reporter covering the Capitol, a press secretary at a cabinet agency, and a press secretary in the legislature,” Governor Rendell said. “Gary is a well respected, hard working and experienced press secretary, and I couldn’t be more pleased that he is joining my administration.”

Tuma has been special projects director for the Pennsylvania Democratic Party since May 11. Prior to that, he spent more than 13 years as press secretary to the state Senate Democratic Appropriations Committee, during the chairmanship of former Senator Vince Fumo and most recently during that of Senator Jay Costa of Allegheny County. A native of Pittsburgh, Tuma came to Harrisburg in 1989 to cover state government as a reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, for whom he had worked since 1980. In the 1970s, he also worked at newspapers in State College, Pennsylvania and Hollywood, Florida. Tuma holds

He seems to be genuinely remorseful for what he has done.    “Michael Vick’s work with the Humane Society has been a positive step and I believe he will continue to be an advocate for protecting our canine friends.  His experience will add extra weight to that message, and I look forward to working with him toward achieving that goal.”

Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Philadelphia) also had a take on the signing:

“Even from a football standpoint this signing makes little sense. McNabb is clearly the starting QB and will remain the starting QB. So the Eagles are going through all
