House Judiciary Holds Informational Meeting with Board of Pardons

The House Judiciary Committee held an informational meeting with John Heaton, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons to discuss the board’s budgetary concerns. The bulk of the discussion centered on how Act 134 of 2008 has lowered the number of applications to the board and, further, how staff reductions have reduced the number of hearings held each year. Onorato Calls for Government Reform

Dan Onorato, Democratic candidate for Governor, held a press conference today to express support for reforms laid out by a report issued last week by the grand jury investigating the Bonusgate scandal. “The culture and the system are broken and it needs to be changed,” he stated. “I am the only Harrisburg outsider running in the race that can bring the reform that the people of Pennsylvania are calling for.” Among the reforms, Onorato said he is in favor of term limits, the elimination of  per diems, strengthening the lobbying law, and limiting campaign contributions. LEGISLATURE, GOVERNOR NOT CLOSE TO BUDGET DEAL

According to an article in the Patriot News, After taking 101 extra days to pass this year’s state budget, with all the pain and angst that delay caused for human service agencies, schools and state workers, one would think that lawmakers and Gov. Ed Rendell would go to great lengths to pass the 2010-11 budget on time. But with 32 days until the fiscal year draws to a close on June 30, they are no closer to a deal this year than they were at this point last year.
