Rep. Gergely to potentially run for retiring Senator Logan’s seat in the 45th Senatorial district

Rep. Marc Gergely announced yesterday he is considering a run for retiring Senator Sean Logan’s seat in the 45th Senatorial district. Rep. Gergely has served in the House since 2002. A date of a special election is unknown. Click here to read Rep. Gergely’s statement.


Rep. Barbara McIlvaine Smith to seek Democratic nomination; Mark Stevens withdraws from race

Governor Rendell Announces New Keystone Innovation Zone Grants

Governor Ed Rendell held a brief press conference today to announce a total of $2.5 million in new Keystone Innovation Grants designed to spur technological advancements in the medical and education fields. Also, speaking at the press conference were heads of academic institutions that have benefited from the grants in the past and are receiving additional money. Democratic Senator Sean Logan to resign

Senator Sean Logan (D-Allegheny) announced today he will resign from the Senate, effective August 24th, to become the Vice President for community relations at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

CORBETT STICKING WITH NO TAX PLEDGE

According to an WITF article, republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Corbett is trumpeting his “no tax” pledge on the campaign trail. Against a backdrop of waterfalls, palm trees and lush vegetation, Corbett told a group of supporters at Longwood Gardens he’s the only candidate who will lower state spending next year. Corbett says Pennsylvania’s taxes are too high, and the levies are dragging down the state’s economy. “That’s why I’ve signed a no new tax pledge. I would note, though, that my opponent has not signed that pledge, nor do I think he’s going to sign a tax pledge like that. PA AMONG FINALISTS IN SECOND ROUND OF RACE TO THE TOP

Governor Rendell announced yesterday that Pennsylvania is one of 19 finalists in the second round of the federal Race to the Top grant competition. If selected, the state could receive up to $400 million in federal funding to help build on and accelerate its strong progress in education reform and student achievement over the past seven years. “Pennsylvania’s finalist status in round two of Race to the Top is a real testament to the hard work we’ve already done in implementing targeted reforms that help our students to achieve and succeed,” Governor Rendell said. “Pennsylvania’s education community should be enormously proud that these efforts have been recognized in advancing our Race to the Top application.” Check the Press Releases section of the PLS Capitol Toolbox to read the governor’s full statement.

RENDELL DOUBTS PA WILL RECEIVE FMAP MONEY

According to an WITF article, Governor Rendell is planning to try to resurrect some of his policy proposals that weren’t adopted by the General Assembly, if Congress doesn’t pass a federal medical funding bill. Rendell admits prospects for receiving the $850 million that the commonwealth’s budget banks on are growing bleak. He says if he’s forced to cut the money out of the spending plan he signed into law this month, he’ll ask lawmakers to reconsider setting caps on the vendor sales discount the state gives to companies who file taxes on time. DEWEESE TO STAND TRIAL

According to an article in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Rep. Bill DeWeese (D-Greene) told a grand jury in December that his state-paid aides regularly campaigned during business hours from their desks in state offices. House Democratic Policy Committee Hears from Search and Rescue Organizations

The House Democratic Policy Committee held a public hearing to hear from Search and Rescue Organizations. The committee heard the funding plight of the organizations and also heard from state departments and agencies who offered ways to help the organizations. Sestak Featured at Press Club Luncheon

Congressman Joe Sestak was the featured speaker at today’s Press Club Luncheon, and the United States Senate candidate’s comments focused primarily on framing the differences between himself and Pat Toomey. “I believe the strength of America is built up by the hardworking many, that’s why we need to put aside politics and find practical solutions to put people back to work,” he stated. “In the military there is no room for ideology, you have to be a problem solver. Center for Indpnt. Living Opportunities Celebrates ADA 20th Anniv.

The PA Council on Independent Living & Center for Independent Living Opportunities held a press conference today at the Capitol to highlight and celebrate the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which was signed into law 20 years ago. Hillary Hasson, Executive Director of  CIL Opportunities and Senator Michael Waugh pointed out the help and advantages to all of society with the passage of the law.
