This afternoon Governor Rendell held a brief press conference to announce that June revenues for the state came in above estimates. The positive figures, he said, indicate a recovery is coming and also mean Pennsylvania’s deficit for the year has been reduced to $1.176 billion from previous estimates of between $1.2 and 1.3 billion.
The governor also indicated his involvement in negotiating the remaining pieces of the budget puzzle has effectively ended, with the four legislative caucuses left to hammer out their remaining disputes over issues such as the creation of an independent fiscal office. He said he expects at this point to sign the budget and all its associated legislation on Tuesday, July 6, in Harrisburg. Check the Press Conferences section of the Capitol Toolbox later for the full story.
