MECHANICSBURG — Governor Ed Rendell touted the state’s $250 million increase in education funding during a budget-signing ceremony at a Mechanicsburg elementary school on Tuesday but reiterated his disappointment that lawmakers were unable to enact a series of taxes on tobacco products that could have held off further spending cuts.

RocktheCapitol.org and Democracy Rising PA held a press conference in the Capitol Rotunda today to mark of the 5th anniversary of the infamous Pay Raise of 2005. Eric Epstein of RocktheCapitol.org stated “the rules have not changed to protect the innocent, and they are not going to change until we have a constitutional convention or a sustained, broad-based insurrection against the political lard gumming up the works.” Tim Potts of Democracy Rising PA stated “without a Constitution convention in Pennsylvania, our future as citizens is not our own. RENDELL TO SIGN BUDGET TODAY
According to an article in the Patriot News, Governor Ed Rendell is scheduled to sign the $28 billion 2010-11 state budget at Elmwood Elementary School in Mechanicsburg at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. The governor has never signed a state budget before the June 30 deadline. The budget would have been cheery news for the children, who are out of school now, because it contains $5.8 billion for basic education, a $250 million increase. Many other programs, however, will see decreases, and about 1,000 state workers are expected to lose their jobs. The budget calls for no broad-based tax increases.
