RENDELL TOUTS EDUCATION FUNDING DURING BUDGET SIGNING
Governor Ed Rendell touted the state’s $250 million increase in education funding during a budget-signing ceremony at a Mechanicsburg elementary school on Tuesday but reiterated his disappointment that lawmakers were unable to enact a series of taxes on tobacco products that could have held off further spending cuts. The state’s chief executive also fended off criticism over $20 million in economic development money slated to help construct buildings dedicated to U.S. Senator Arlen Specter and the late Congressman John Murtha. PHILLY SCHOOLS TO ADJUST BUDGET
According to an article in the Philadelphia Daily News, school district officials aren’t jumping for joy over their share of the increased state-education budget Gov. Rendell signed yesterday, but they’re not crying broke, either. “We’re not saying that a reduction of $30 to $40 million doesn’t hurt, but we do have a budget of $3.2 billion here,” said the district’s chief business officer Michael Masch. “We’re not wasting money.
