House Democratic Policy Committee Hears from Search and Rescue Organizations

The House Democratic Policy Committee held a public hearing to hear from Search and Rescue Organizations. The committee heard the funding plight of the organizations and also heard from state departments and agencies who offered ways to help the organizations. Sestak Featured at Press Club Luncheon

Congressman Joe Sestak was the featured speaker at today’s Press Club Luncheon, and the United States Senate candidate’s comments focused primarily on framing the differences between himself and Pat Toomey. “I believe the strength of America is built up by the hardworking many, that’s why we need to put aside politics and find practical solutions to put people back to work,” he stated. “In the military there is no room for ideology, you have to be a problem solver. If we want to create jobs we need leaders dedicated to practical solutions that get results.” Congressman Sestak also fielded questions on Afghanistan, FMAP, and the economy. Center for Indpnt. Living Opportunities Celebrates ADA 20th Anniv.

The PA Council on Independent Living & Center for Independent Living Opportunities held a press conference today at the Capitol to highlight and celebrate the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which was signed into law 20 years ago. Hillary Hasson, Executive Director of  CIL Opportunities and Senator Michael Waugh pointed out the help and advantages to all of society with the passage of the law.

CONAHAN PLEADS GUILTY

According to an Associated Press article in the Patriot News, a former judge in northeastern Pennsylvania pleaded guilty Friday to a racketeering conspiracy charge for his role in a kickback scheme that put juvenile defendants, many without lawyers, behind bars for sometimes minor offenses.  Michael Conahan, 58, faces up to 20 years in prison after his plea in Scranton federal court; no sentencing date was set. PA HIGH-RISK INSURANCE POOL DELAYED

According to an article in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, other states have begun accepting applications for new federally funded high-risk health insurance pools, but Pennsylvania’s Insurance Department is still working out the details of the program and has yet to announce the selection of a contractor that will operate the plan. That means the state is behind its own timetable for having the coverage pool up and running. The plan is meant to provide coverage for uninsured Pennsylvanians with preexisting health conditions who are unable to secure or afford coverage on the open market. The state is receiving $160 million in federal money, and possibly more in the future, to set up
