Auditor General Expresses Concern with Turnpike Commission Debt

Auditor General Jack Wagner held a news conference today to express concern with the long-term debt incurred by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. He said the Commission’s debt has increased 181 percent since the enactment of Act 44 of 2007. Under the provisions of Act 44, the Commission is required to provide $450 million per year to PennDOT for funding for roads and bridges and mass transit. Wagner pointed out the Commission is required to make these annual payments for 46 more years and it will add at least $20 billion in additional debt to the Commission. He cautioned that if the Commission were to default on the obligations then Pennsylvania taxpayers would be required to assume the debt. Wagner called on the General Assembly to amend or repeal Act 44. Check the Capitol Toolbox later today for the full story.

A Prosector and Litigator, Dan McCaffery Seeks Attorney General Nod

The first in a series of interviews with the candidates seeking the Office of Attorney General in 2012, PLS sat down with Democratic candidate Dan McCaffery this week. McCaffery is formally launching his campaign today in Philadelphia.

Falling back on his experience as a Philadelphia prosecutor and a commercial litigator, McCaffery feels he is the best candidate to hold the post as Pennsylvania’s next Attorney General. With this experience in hand, McCaffery views the office not merely as the Commonwealth’s top prosecutor, but as a way to help protect taxpayers from corporate wrongdoing.

The full interview is available on the PLS Capitol Toolbox. Below are a few excerpts from the interview:

You seem to bring both sides, not only the prosecutor’s side but the commercial aspect. How do you think you will use both of those combined if you are elected as Attorney General?

First of all you have to realize what the Attorney General’s office does. The Attorney General’s office is not just the top prosecutor. The office’s responsibilities also include civil litigation and defending the Commonwealth from lawsuits brought against it. I am the only candidate in this race who brings military experience, legislative experience, executive experience,

GOVERNOR CORBETT ORDERS FREEZE OF NEARLY $160 MILLION IN STATE SPENDING

With commonwealth revenues continuing to come in below estimate for the 2011-12 fiscal year, Governor Tom Corbett has directed his Budget Office to freeze nearly $160 million in state spending.  The governor also has asked government entities not under his jurisdiction to reduce their spending by nearly $66 million.  “Until revenue collections improve, we must take precautions to ensure that the commonwealth budget remains in balance,” Governor Corbett said in a press release. Governor Corbett has directed most agencies to reduce their overall 2011-12 spending by 3 percent. Some individual appropriations will see spending reductions of up to 10 percent. The state-related universities – Penn State, the University of Pittsburgh, Temple and Lincoln universities – will see a reduction of 5 percent, or $25.7 million, in state funding.  Check out the Press Releases section of the PLS Capitol Toolbox to read the governor’s full statement.
