MEMBERS DISCUSS ECONOMIC IMPACT OF CLOSING REFINERIES IN SEPA
A handful of House members held an informal meeting yesterday with John Kulik, Executive Vice President for the PA Petroleum Marketers & Convenience Stores Association (PPMCSA), and with representatives from United Steel Workers, to discuss the economic issues associated with the closing of the Sunoco and ConocoPhillips refineries in Southeastern PA. In a letter to members, Rep. Stephen Barrar (R-Delaware), chairman of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness committee, explained “The potential permanent closing of the Sunoco and Conoco refineries has raised serious concerns beyond the immediate region of Southeast Pennsylvania. The overwhelming share of gasoline, diesel and heating oil for the state is transported from Southeast Pennsylvania and across the state, through essentially two pipelines.” He argued the plan to take three major refineries offline simultaneously raises concerns regarding future supply sources, distribution logistics and the ultimate price to consumers, noting the system is already strained.
