Joint Conservation Committee Hears Presentation on the Sustainable Forestry Initiative

The Joint Legislative Conservation Committee heard a presentation on the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program.  Chairman Scott Hutchinson (R-Venango) stated SFI has a long and distinguished history in Pennsylvania and a great record of success; the program works closely with the committee and forestry taskforce and is a valuable source of information and expertise. Nathan Fice, Program Manager, said SFI is an independent non-profit organization created by the American Forest and Paper Foundation in the early 90’s and is the largest single forest standard in the world with around 190 million acres certified in North America. Rep. Rapp Introduces Women’s Right-to-Know Act

To mark the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren) and a host of legislators held a press conference to build legislative support for the Women’s Right-to-Know Act (HB 1077). “I’m introducing this legislation because every woman deserves the right to be fully informed when considering the termination of her pregnancy,” Rep. Rapp stated. “This without question includes the right to choose whether or not to view an ultrasound of her child within 24 hours of undergoing an abortion.” Check out the Around the Capitol section of the PLS Capitol Toolbox later today to read the full story.

Coalition Urges Governor/Legislature to Take Action on Transportation Funding

The Keystone Transportation Coalition today called on Governor Tom Corbett and the General Assembly to take action on the recommendations of the Governor’s Transportation Funding Commission that Coalition founder George Wolff said “would put state funding on firm ground for the first time in decades at only modest cost to an average transportation system user.” Wolff was joined by spokesmen from several organizations including the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the Port of Pittsburgh Commission, SEPTA, the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association, the Keystone State Railroad Association and the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors. JUDICIARY REJECTS GOVERNOR’S PLAN TO FREEZE BUDGET

According to an article in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, now that Gov. Tom Corbett has ordered a freeze of nearly $160 million in state spending and requested a freeze of almost $66 million from independent governmental entities, civil legal service programs are facing a 10 percent cut in state funding. But James Koval, who is part of the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts’ budget and finance team, said the courts have already informed the Corbett administration that the judiciary won’t be making the midyear budget freeze. Eighteen percent of the court’s budget is made up of state grants, such as reimbursement to the counties of court costs, which have already been expended, Mr. Koval said.
