House Tourism Learns about Wine Industry

The House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee today met with representatives of the Wine Association and discussed how the wine industry is flourishing in Pennsylvania. Additionally, it was suggested that wineries be granted the ability to have a permanent presence in farmers markets, separate from the current 40 days max.

House Tourism Committee Looks to Promote Tourism in Pennsylvania

The House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee met this morning with representatives from across the Pennsylvania tourism industry to learn about the status of the industry and discuss possible initiatives to expand tourism promotion. The industry pointed out that every dollar spent on tourism promotion has a return of $25 to the commonwealth.

House Tourism and Recreational Development Seeks to Find Dedicated Funding Source For Tourism Industry

The House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee held an informational meeting with representatives of the tourism industry and the Department of Community and Economic Development to discuss dedicated funding for the tourism industry. Those who spoke at the hearing detailed how a decrease in General Fund monies for the tourism industry has had a negative impact on Pennsylvania’s tourism industry. Also discussed were possible dedicated funding sources so as to limit the need for General Fund revenue to help the tourism industry.

The House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee held a public hearing on HB 1651, regarding the hotel occupancy tax. The committee heard from many stakeholders, the Department of Revenue, and the Department of Community and Economic Development. House Tourism Cmte discusses funding with Governor's Tourism Partnership in Philadelphia

Members of the Governor’s Tourism Partnership met with members of the House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee today to discuss funding options to boost state tourism funding. Mickey Rowley, Deputy Secretary for Tourism, for the Department of Community and Economic Development, moderated the discussion that centered on finding methods to restore the state tourism funds that were cut in last year’s budget. The group considered methods used in other states such as taxes and performance based caps. Chairman Thaddeus Kirkland (D-Philadelphia) said the state needed to find “a source of dedicated funding” in order to offset past and future budget cuts. House Transportation – 9:30 a.m.

The committee conducted a public hearing on the Department of Transportation’s proposed regulation pertaining to transportation enhancement grants from the revenues generated by the Automated Red Light Enforcement System in Philadelphia. Representatives from the City and the Philadelphia Parking Authority along with former State Representative George Kenney advocated the moneys should be used exclusively in Philadelphia and not throughout the Commonwealth. The House Transportation Committee held a hearing this morning regarding HB 1323 which would expand those eligible to acquire an Occupational Limited License to first offense drug offenders who have served 60 days of suspension. Delegation from PennDOT, the National Conference of State Lagislatures, and Neighborhood Legal Services gave testimony, along with two common plea court judges. The committee unanimously reported as committed a bridge designation bill and a road designation bill. HB 1993 designates the reconstructed Gay Street Bridge in Phoenixville as the Veterans memorial Gay Street Bridge. SB 1070 designates a portion of Route 611 in Monroe County as the Trooper Joshua D.
