Graham Spanier was the featured speaker at this month’s Press Club luncheon, and the Penn State president spoke on a variety of subjects related to higher education and Penn State in particular.
Spanier said state funding is vital in helping the university keep tuition costs down, and commented he believes Penn State will not receive as large a cut next year as it did in the last budget. He remarked the university’s “land grant” mission suffers most from state funding cuts, as services such as the Penn State ag extensions do not have supplementary funding sources like tuition that can make up for appropriations cuts. He added the university recently held educational seminars for roughly 85,000 Pennsylvania landowners on the topic of Marcellus Shale drilling and issues related to leasing of their land, at no charge. He said such classes are also particularly vulnerable to budget cuts.
