Gov. Corbett, Legislators Address REACH Alliance Rally in Support of School Choice

Hundreds of students, parents, and advocates gathered in the Capitol Rotunda today in support of school choice in Pennsylvania and to urge passage of SB 1 by the House of Representatives. Speakers included: Governor Tom Corbett, Sens. Jeffrey Piccola (R-Dauphin) and Anthony Williams (D-Philadelphia), Reps. Jim Christiana (R-Beaver), Vanessa Lowery Brown (D-Philadelphia) and Tony Payton (D-Philadelphia), Secretary of Education Ronald Tomalis, Ana Puig of Freedomworks PA, and Dr. Ronald Bowes of the Diocese of Pittsburgh.  Check the Capitol Toolbox later today for the full story.


Governor Outlines Education Priorities

Governor Corbett held a press conference at the Lincoln Charter School in York today to outline his agenda for education reform. Joined by Secretary of Education Ron Tomalis and several legislative leaders in education, Corbett listed his top four priorities for school reform in Pennsylvania including: opportunity scholarships, expanding the Educational Improvement Tax Credits program, improved charter school quality and accountability, and more robust and comprehensive educator evaluations. Gov. Corbett Signs Legislation Putting a Veteran on the State Civil Service Commission

Gov. Tom Corbett today signed HB 378 putting  veteran on the state civil service commission. In signing the legislation, the governor noted the veteran’s preference for civil service jobs and said it is not merely “enough to give our word, but we must keep it.” The governor was joined by the Chairmen of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee; Rep. Ron Marsico (R-Dauphin), the bill’s prime sponsor; Rep. Joe Hackett (R-Delaware); along with several veterans and their families. Following the bill signing, the governor answered press questions regarding Marcellus Shale, state tax revenues, school choice, transportation funding, and liquor store privatization.

Gov. Corbett Unveils Much Anticipated Shale Policy; Says “Energy Equals Jobs”

Gov. Tom Corbett held a press conference today to outline his Marcellus Shale proposals stemming from the recommendations of his Marcellus Shale Advisory Commission. He noted his proposal includes increasing environmental standards; an impact fee collected by counties to be used by them, local municipalities, and the Commonwealth to offset development impacts; and proposals to make Pennsylvania energy independent by utilizing natural gas. He discussed job growth potential stemming from Marcellus Shale development by noting his new equation is “energy equals jobs.”

First Puppies Penny & Harry Introduced at Governor’s Mansion.

Meet Penny and Harry! Governor and First Lady Corbett introduced the winners of the ‘Name the Pups’ contest. Out of 548 entries from children from around the state, the names Penny and Harry were chosen for the now eleven-week old sister and brother. First Lady Susan Corbett indicated 34 children chose “Penny” while four chose “Harry” and three children had the same combination of names. The full story is posted on the Capitol Toolbox.

Governor, Legislators Lead Rally for School Choice

Governor Tom Corbett, Lt. Governor Jim Cawley and a host of legislators gathered with hundreds of students and parents on the Capitol steps today to support SB 1. “We’re talking about the future of Pennsylvania, we’re talking about 20, 30 years from now not having to fight the same battle we’ve been fighting for years to get you a good education to give you choice,” Governor Corbett stated. “We’re here with you, we’re working with the legislature and we will get a bill that allows you to have the choice you need to get a good education.” Check out the PLS Capitol Toolbox later today to read the full story.

Governor Says PA Tests Show No Elevated Radioactivity

At a Capitol Hill news conference, Gov. Tom Corbett announced that weekend testing of public drinking water found no elevated levels of radioactivity. He said that on Friday, concentrations of Iodine-131 were found in rainwater samples collected from Pennsylvania’s nuclear power plant facilities. Gov. Gov Corbett, U.S. Reps Joe Pitts and Glenn Thompson and others discuss “Obama Care”

U.S. Representatives Joe Pitts (R) and Glenn Thompson (R) stood with Governor Tom Corbett, Rep. Matt Baker (R-Tioga) and Kevin Shivers of the NFIB to express frustration over the federal health care legislation they referred to as “Obama Care.” They answered various questions from the press and discussed options and opportunities to repeal portions of the law over the next year. They stated the current law is too costly to the states and private enterprises and has decreased health care access to residents. Corbett Announces Changes in DOH, DOS to Improve Monitoring of Abortion Clinics

Governor Tom Corbett held a press conference today to announce policy changes to the Department of Health and the Department of State in the wake of a grand jury report detailing the crimes committed inside the Women’s Medical Society and the revelation that complaints about unsafe and unsanitary conditions went unheeded for more than ten years. “This doesn’t even rise to the level of government run amok,” Governor Corbett stated. “It was government not running at all.
