At a Capitol Hill news conference today, Governor Edward Rendell announced he has signed six more execution warrants and also has sent a letter to the members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly urging them “to explore whether there can be any additional steps taken that allow for a thorough and exhaustive review of the facts and the law in each case, but that would significantly shorten the time between the offense and carrying out the execution.” He said he still believes the death penalty can be a deterrent but “a 15, 20, or 25-year lapse between imposition of a death sentence and the actual execution is no deterrent.” In his letter, Governor Rendell asked lawmakers to “examine the merits of continuing to have death penalty on the books as opposed to the certainty of a life sentence without any chance of parole, pardon or commutation.” Check the Capitol Toolbox later for the full story.
