Pennsylvania Legislative Services: Open Position! PLS has an opening for a full time, high energy, experienced legislative information professional. Duties are diverse but mainly include data entry (live Session Coverage) and maintaining key information on our main product, the Capitol Toolbox. Applicant should be comfortable working within a team atmosphere and have a strong ability to prioritize and multitask, be detailed and work independently. PROP, PA Food Merchants Association, PA Recycling Markets Center, PA Waste Industries Association and other recyclers in PA joined with Lt. Governor Cawley and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful (KPB) to announce Pennsylvania is now the fifth state in the nation to adopt the “A Bag’s Life” program. “A Bag’s Life” is a team effort of promoting the goal of reducing, reusing and recycling plastic bags. Penny and Harry
Meet Penny and Harry! Governor and First Lady Corbett introduced the winners of the ‘Name the Pups’ contest. Out of 548 entries from children from around the state, the names Penny and Harry were chosen for the now eleven-week old sister and brother. First Lady Susan Corbett indicated 34 children chose “Penny” while four chose “Harry” and three children had the same combination of names. The full story is posted on the Capitol Toolbox.

At a press conference in the Media Center this morning, Rep. Galloway, joined by Reps. Davis, Kortz, Readshaw and DePasquale, called on Gov. Corbett to sign an Executive Order to implement E-Verify. The E-Verify system would verify employees of companies who contract with state agencies and contractors are legal workers. Rep. Galloway asked Gov. Corbett to follow suit with the governors of Florida, Minnesota, Virginia and Idaho who have their own executive orders. Members of the Senate Appropriations Committee dove into questions with Acting Secretary of Agriculture George Greig this afternoon. Questions about the raw milk industry, the Penn State Cooperative Extension, the status of farms in the state and nutrient management were among the many asked. In a 2-hour budget hearing this afternoon, the House Appropriations Committee heard from PASSHE Chancellor Dr. John C. Cavanaugh and Clarion University President, Dr. Karen Whitney and Bloomsburg University President Dr. David L. Soltz. Ninety percent of the State System’s students come from within PA. Acting Health Secretary Dr. Eli Avila received a heavy line of questioning from Senate Appropriations Committee members this afternoon. Many members wanted to know specifically how the Department intends to handle significant cuts to various programs. Other questions raised focused on inspections on abortion clinics and other medical clinics, the Newborn Hearing Screening program, retention of primary care physicians and Lyme Disease. Senate President Pro Tempore Scarnati announced this morning that the special election to fill the vacancy in the 11th District will be held March 15, 2011. Senator Michael O’Pake (D-Berks) passed away on December 27, 2010.
