House Aging Conducts Informational Meeting on Pennsylvania Lottery

The morning after the Corbett Administration announced it is exploring a private management agreement for the Pennsylvania lottery, Aging Secretary Brian Duke, Revenue Secretary Dan Meuser, and Lottery Executive Director Todd Rucci responded to questions from the members of the House Aging & Older Adult Services Committee regarding the proposal and the financial future of the lottery. Lawmakers expressed agreement for the need for growth in lottery sales to sustain the various aging programs but they also expressed concern for the current employees of the State Lottery and about the role of the private management firm. House Aging Committee Conducts Hearing on Senior Alert Systems

The House Aging & Older Adult Services Committee conducted a public hearing on legislation establishing a senior alert system to aid in the recovery of missing endangered adults with mental impairments. Testimony was presented by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association; the Pennsylvania State Police; and the Department of Aging. Senate Appropriations Budget Hearing with Department of Aging

Secretary of Aging John Michael Hall responded to a number of questions from committee members on a variety of issues including: federal waiver programs; the Office of Long-Term Living; senior centers; Area Agencies on Aging; integrated care; nursing home care; and funding from the State Lottery. PA Business Groups Unveil a Pro-Growth Agenda

Advocates of a business-growth plan for Pennsylvania held a press conference to release a report from businesses large and small statewide. Entitled “Growing Pennsylvania’s 21st Century Economy”, the report focuses on how to take advantage of global recovery by becoming more competitive, and lists public policy proposals to achieve this goal. House Democratic Policy Committee – 10:00 a.m.

The House Democratic Policy Committee met today to discuss issues related to jobs and the economy in Pennsylvania and across the nation. Committee members heard testimony from Mark Price and Stephen Herzenberg from the Keystone Research Center, Sharon Ward from the Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center, Matthew Brouillette from the Commonwealth Foundation for Public Policy Alternatives and Richard Stein from the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia. House Agriculture & Rural Affairs – 9:30 a.m.

The House Ag Committee heard a presentation from the Penn State Cooperative Extension this morning on the various issues relating to the expansion in drilling in the Marcellus Shale. Representatives from the extension provided a detailed overview of the potential benefits of growing the natural gas drilling industry, and the ramifications that growth would have on the environment, municipalities and the economy.

House Labor Relations – 9:30 a.m.

The House Labor Relations Committee met today with representatives of the Keystone Research Center to discuss the condition of Pennsylvania’s economy and labor force. Dr. Mark Price and Dr. StephenHerzenberg of the Keystone Research Center painted a bleak picture of Pennsylvania’s employment levels for committee members citing a continued rise in unemployment compensation claims. Doctors Price and Herzenberg offered suggestions to the committee on ways to correct employment levels and answered questions from committee members regarding a range of economic issues. Senate Aging and Youth Committee – Secretary Hall Nomination – 11:00 p.m.

The Senate Aging and Youth Committee held a nomination hearing for acting Secretary of Aging, John Michael Hall. After a session of questions and answers, Chairperson of the Senate Aging and Youth Committee, asked for a motion to report the nomination. Senator Specter discusses economic situation

Senate Appropriations – Department of Aging – 1:00 p.m.

The Senate Appropriations Committee held a hearing with the Department of Aging today to discuss several issues, specifically, the proposed merger of certain services with the Department of Public Welfare into the new Department of Aging and Long-Term Living.
